Dog is Able to Run for the First Time Ever – Thanks to His 3-D Printed Leg
Derby was born with underdeveloped front limbs, and although he is a healthy dog, it nearly caused him to be put down. His original owners sent him to the Peace and Paws Dog Rescue after not wanting him. But, he would not be unwanted for too long.
Fortunately enough, Derby met someone who was not only compassionate enough to save his life, but also helped him improve his walking situation. Tara Anderson, a director at 3D Systems, specializes in 3-D printing and heard about Derby's condition. Tara felt the need to do something about it and solve his mobility limitations. At first, she set him up with a set of wheels for his front paws. It worked well, but she realized she can do even better for him. She created prosthetic legs that worked perfectly for him.
Derby was finally able to move even more naturally, fitting his unique anatomy.
"It was incredible and emotional the first time we saw him run on his new legs," Sherry said. "Incredible because it was his very first time on them and emotional because he was so excited to be running."
Some may call him disabled, but they clearly have never seen him in action.
