Dolly Parton Supports Goddaughter Miley Cyrus: 'You've Got to Almost Sacrifice Your Soul' to Succeed

Country music legend Dolly Parton has spoken out and defended her goddaughter, singer-actress Miley Cyrus in a new interview. Parton noted that "it's not easy being young" and said that Cyrus still has a lot of talent and opportunities ahead of her.

"I've loved her through the years and watched her grow up, and I've seen how smart she is and how talented she is," Parton told the London Evening Standard. "I don't think people really realize yet what a great singer and writer she is. She's just trying to find her own place and wings and learn to fly."

Parton is now a country music legend but had to struggle to build her own career. It didn't come easy to the 67-year-old who faced criticism for her looks and still faces some critique today. Parton has always managed to brush off her critics, though, and has continued performing, building an empire that not only includes music, but movies and even a tourist attraction known as Dollywood.

"It's not easy being young," Parton added. "It's hard to know what to do. You've almost got to sacrifice your damn soul just to get anything done." The godmother also noted that Cyrus has her number if she would ever want her advice about anything.

"If she needs my opinion on something, I will surely give it and there have been times we've talked. But I would never dream of calling her and saying, 'Well why are you doing this?' or, 'You shouldn't do that.' I know that she has thought this all through. We'll let her go and do her own thing," Parton explained.

Cyrus, meanwhile, is continuing to promote her song, "Wrecking Ball," which has caused a great deal of controversy for its music video. Many have noted that Cyrus wants to put away her Disney image once and for all and is working overtime to do so. Yet she has the full support of her family and now, her godmother.
