Donald Trump Mexico Wall 2017: San Diego Companies Submit Proposals to Build Wall; Contracts to Be Awarded in May
Companies from all around the United States are now submitting their proposals to build the wall that U.S. President Donald Trump wants built along the Mexican border. While hundreds of companies have expressed interest in bidding, San Diego companies seem to be the most interested in bagging the project.
By next week, around 500 companies that signed up to join the auction are due at the Department of Homeland Security. The White House previously released the preliminary guidelines for the project, stating that the wall must be 30-feet high and must look imposing from the Mexican side and aesthetically beautiful from the U.S. side.
Of the contractors that submitted their bids, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will select the finalists, who will have to build a 30-foot long prototype of the actual wall in San Diego. According to National Border Patrol Council vice president Shawn Moran, it's not surprising that the administration wants the wall to start in San Diego. Aside from the fact that it is the second largest Border Patrol sector, it is also where the first border fence was built.
As of now, several companies from San Diego have already expressed their interest in building the wall, including R.E. Staite Engineering and vScenario. Companies from San Diego have high interest in the project since they consider the wall as a big economic opportunity for their region.
Meanwhile, the proposed wall has already received backlashes from critics. Recently, a lawyer based in San Francisco proposed a bill prohibiting California from doing business with companies who will participate in the project.
The Mexican wall is expected to cost around $10 billion. Based on the timeline laid out by the government, the contracts will be awarded May this year and construction of the wall will begin in San Diego in June.
