Doris Day Birthday: America's Sweetheart Keeps Age a Secret (VIDEO)
Today marks the birthday of American actress Doris Day. Of course a lady never tells her secrets, and Day's actual age is no exception.
While Doris Day began as a big band singer, she quickly became America's sweetheart during the 1940's and 1950's, earning the title of the "girl next door." Day's career spans over 50 years, with her first film debut in 1948 as the star in "Romance on the High Seas."
In 1954 Day starred in "Love Me or Leave Me," a film that she would later consider one of her best. Day also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1956 for "Que Sera, Sera," which she sang in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much." Day's career peaked in in the sixties, during which time she appeared in "Pillow Talk," "Send Me No Flowers," and "The Thrill of It All."
Day lost popularity in the late 1960s though, during the age of baby boomers who referred to Day as "the world's oldest virgin."
Day's last Top 10 box office film came in 1966 titled "The Glass Bottom Boat." Her last feature film. "With Six You Get Eggroll" was released in 1968.
In 2011, Doris Day released her first studio album with new material since 1967, titled "The Love Album." Day later became the oldest women to ever top U.K. Billboard charts, when the album debuted at No. 9.
While April 3 has been confirmed as the actress' birthday, her age appears to be a mystery to most. Some have reported that Day is 88, others say 89 or 90. Perhaps Day just prefers her age to be a mystery.
"The really frightening thing about middle age is that you know you'll grow out of it," Day once said.
