'Downsizing' News, Release Date: Paramount Pictures Drops Official Trailer
Paramount Pictures has released the official trailer of "Downsizing" starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig.
The trailer opened with a seminar as a man explained that overpopulation was the root of all the adversities currently facing humankind. He unveiled science's practical solution to this problem: Downsizing. In this case, downsizing meant actually shrinking people.
The world watched the unveiling in awe. One of the people thoroughly impressed was Paul (Damon). Paul and his wife, Audrey (Wiig), were seen considering the idea of downsizing themselves. They saw their already-downsized friend Dave (Jason Sudeikis), who explained to Paul the many benefits of downsizing.
"Downsizing takes the pressure right off," Dave said, brushing off the economic and environmental benefits of the procedure. "Downsizing is about saving yourself. We live like kings. We've got the best houses, best restaurants. Cheesecake Factory - got three of 'em."
Sure enough, a little goes a long way when one is downsized. Paul and Audrey find out that their $52,000 is equivalent to $12.5 million in the downsized community. Convinced, they decide to go through the "permanent and irreversible" procedure. Soon, Paul and Audrey go home to a huge mansion with many amenities.
The trailer also previewed other cast members, including Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and even Neil Patrick Harris for a brief moment.
"Downsizing" was directed by Alexander Payne, who has been nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Director. He has won two Academy Awards in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
Despite getting high praise at the Venice Film Festival, the film garnered mixed reviews at the Telluride Film Festival. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 72 percent fresh rating as of writing, though there are a lot of people who want to see it.
"Downsizing" is set to premiere in U.S. cinemas on Dec. 22.
