'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers: 'No One Dies This Season,' Main Actress Promises
"Downton Abbey" is known for taking risks and getting rid of beloved characters via childbirth or an unexpected car crash. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as it has been revealed that no characters will be lost this upcoming season.
"There aren't any plans for any big characters to die this year. I think it would be very unwise to do any more deaths because the viewers don't like them," actress Lesley Nicol, who plays cook Mrs. Patmore, revealed. "Dame Maggie (Smith) is in it a lot this year. Don't worry – she's in it plenty."
As happy as fans may be to get to see another season of the show, Nicol warned that the series will definitely not last forever.
"I don't know how long it will last," Nicol said. "I know it won't go on years and years. Julian (Fellowes) wants to do other things and he will also want to go out on a high, as we all do."
The period show has a slew of loyal fans across the globe and take every event seriously. When Matthew Crawley died in a very unexpected car crash just moments after his first son was born, fans were outraged and devastated. It hit especially hard because it was the special Christmas episode. At the time, Fellowes joked that he had to travel with bodyguards because of the development.
"I was afraid to go out without bodyguards. I was very interested by that," Fellowes said. "People don't understand that we're not in control of that kind of stuff, if an actor wants to leave the show. We did get an absolute barrage of criticism for that. It's calmed down a bit now, actually, but I don't know. What I'm always rather touched by is the way these people become real to the audience."
"Downton Abbey" is set to wrap filming in August; the fifth season will air in the fall in the U.K. and will air in the U.S. in the winter.
