'Downtown Abbey' season 6 won't end happily for everyone

"Downtown Abbey" season 6 is set to premiere in the United Kingdom in less than two weeks. Fans have been highly anticipating the show's last installation, but as what the trailer conveys, it will not be a happy ending for everyone.

Downtown Abbey creator Julian Fellows has warned that not everyone will be happy at the end of the season. But producer Gareth Neame contends that Fellowes' decision for the fate of the show's beloved characters has been just fitting, according to the Independent.

"For a posh series about posh people, it is extraordinarily even-handed," the Independent quotes Neame. "It is a truly democratic series in the sense that the sum of human happiness is as equal upstairs as it is downstairs."

For a start, Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson may — or may not — finally end up together this fall. That is, if she can conquer her anxiety over her beloved seeing her naked at her age. Also, Downtown Abbey will have to lay off some of its staff. Fans may see some butlers or maids being let go as the Grantham estate fights to stay afloat and cut costs, the report details.

While there are upsetting situations, there will also be some delightful and amusing scenes. Lady Violet will start to love her telephone more. Meanwhile, Mrs. Patmore will also encounter another modern innovation in the form of a refrigerator, and there will be some fuss over a hairdryer.

Mary has been left alone with the estate as Tom goes to Boston to begin his new life with Sybbie. Edith will also learn to become empowered by managing a magazine that Michael Gregson left. Sadly, the sisters will continue to be torn apart by their differing lifestyles, the report relays.

Other things to look forward to in Downtown Abbey season 6 include the Dowager Countess' cold lines and the Crawleys learning to live more frugally.

Downtown Abbey season 6 will begin airing in the United Kingdom on Sept. 20 at 9:00 pm on ITV. It will also premiere in the United States on Jan. 3, Enstarz reports.
