Dutch Editor Quits After Blasted by Rihanna for Racist Article
After receiving backlash from singer Rihanna for publishing an article that linked black female entertainers with racial slurs, the editor-in-chief of Jackie Magazine has resigned Tuesday.
Eva Kroes, editor-in-chief at the Dutch publication, released a statement explaining her reason for leaving.
“Because of the enormous pressure from social media, I can promise improvement in terms of language used in future issues of Jackie,” said the publication’s editor of eight years. “Previously, I offered rectification. As I now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution, I am departing.”
The controversy erupted after a recent article printed in the magazine called black female entertainers, “N****B****.” The article listed Rihanna as the epitome of a “n****b****.”
“Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n****b**** and loves to carry herself as such which in her case means dressing half-naked,” the article stated.
Once the singer caught wind of the piece, she took to Twitter to speak out against editor-in-chief, Eva Kroes.
“I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate,” Rihanna tweeted. “You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000's of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article.”
After cursing the editor out on behalf of her race, the editor offered apologies. Kroes blamed American pop culture for her ignorant sentiments and confirmed that she would leave the publication.
"The term 'nigga bitch" has come over from America and we have only this to describe this particular style of clothes that we can try to interpret,” Kroes explained. “After eight years, with my heart and soul, I have worked for Jackie. I realize that these errors - although no malicious intent - is a reason to leave."
