'Dynasty' Reboot Premiere Date, News: Comparing the CW Remake to the 1980's Original

The CW is revisiting "Dynasty" this fall. The show that originally ran in the 1980's to captivate an audience is back with a new generation of actors.

But what will make the reboot distinct from the original? Why did The CW decide to do a new version of "Dynasty"?

"Dynasty" executive producer Josh Schwartz ("Gossip Girl") revealed that the reboot idea begun when they learned that the rights to the show's title was available. From there, he and co-executive producer Stephanie Savage thought it was an indication to bring back the series.

"Every nighttime drama owes a debt to the original 'Dynasty,'" Schwartz said in the New York Paley Fest panel.

Schwartz and Savage then met with Esther Shapiro to discuss the new "Dynasty." Shapiro was one of the executive producers of the '80s series that Aaron Spelling created.

Sallie Patrick, who was tasked as the showrunner of the reboot, had an idea in mind to shift some elements in the original story. Shapiro emphasized that the family aspect should be kept intact.

Patrick said that the "Dynasty" reboot will still be about the affluent Carrington and Colby family. The conflicts, however, will reflect the modern times. For that to happen, Patrick changed the setting from Dallas, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia.

"Denver was obviously chosen for a few solid reasons at the time, being one of the oil capitals," Patrick stated. "We talked about, for our show, 'What is a great city to set this story of a white patriarch who is in a changing world?' For us, Denver didn't have the vibrancy and conflict that we needed."

Back in the '80s, "Dynasty" was considered as a homophobic show. The reboot, however, will feature a same-sex relationship and the families will not have problems with this. They will have other issues to fight over such as control of the company and environmental concerns.

The "Dynasty" reboot will also tackle politics and dynasties, which Schwartz is quite excited to tell. The new version will feature a diverse cast and the characters will be talking about what's happening in other parts of the world as well.

"Dynasty" will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
