Eddie Izzard Completes 27 Marathons for Charity
In what could be one of the most spectacular moments in his career, Eddie Izzard has completed 27 marathons in the span of 27 days - all for the love of charity.
According to BBC News, the 54-year-old had to run a double marathon on Sunday to complete his 27-day challenge. Despite the heat, dehydration, and exhaustion, the comedian was able to end the challenge with great dignity as he stood beneath the statue of widely acclaimed South African president Nelson Mandela.
Izzard claimed victory in Pretoria after the final marathon that ran 26.2 miles. The challenge was done in honor of the late philanthropist and his memory of being jailed for 27 years. In a bid to help this year's Sport Relief event, Izzard was able to raise over $1 million in funds.
The outlet further reports that Izzard had to take a rest day on the fifth day due to health issues, which is why he had to run two marathons on Sunday. Despite his exhaustion, Izzard took the time to thank all the people who showered support for his cause. "It's been the hardest thing I've ever done. Thank you to everyone who has donated [and] don't do this at home," he said while still catching his breath after he completed the final mile.
Other celebrities have reportedly taken part in raising funds for Sport Relief though Izzard was the only one who broke the record of 27 runs within 27 days. The rest, including Welsh rugby player Shane Williams, have carried out similar runs, walks, bike, rides, and other sports activities.
Back in 2012, Izzard attempted to complete a similar feat but unfortunately, his health got in the way and he had to pull out. Despite the earlier failure, Izzard stood up and trained for the project.
In a separate report by the outlet, Izzard said after his run that he couldn't stand straight and had acquired a huge blister. In the end, he took a big gulp from a bottle of champagne to celebrate his feat.
