'Edge of the World' News: Movie Can Pave Way for More US-China Film Partnerships
It's another East-meets-West kind of thing once more after the Mark Gordon Company, The Koch Company, Pegasus Media Group (Simply known as Pegasus, a Chinese entertainment studio) and China Film Group, announced their joint venture for a film that will tackle, incidentally, another East-meets-West thing, "Edge of the World."
"Edge of the World" will be funded by Pegasus and China Film Group while Mark Gordon, Hawk Koch, and Jianjun "Jay" Sun will produce the film. The movie will be executive produced by Jeff Aghassi.
"Edge of the World" will follow a story based on real-life events that happened in the 1930s. The story features Ruth Harkness, a New York Socialite and fashion designer. She heads to China after not hearing any news about her fiancé who goes missing while in search of a mythical creature in the land of the Chinese.
Left without any clue as to what really happened to her fiancé, she is brought to places where she can possibly find the person she is looking for. In her quest, fate hands her an unexpected love and adventure, eventually leading her face to face with a living Panda, which marks the very first time for any westerner to see the animal in the flesh.
"'Edge of the World' whisks audiences away on a gripping journey around the world, and we are fortunate to lend even greater authenticity to the story by filming in China and its beautiful settings. I am happy to be working with Pegasus, China Film Group, and my good friend Hawk in bringing this gripping film to life," stated Gordon.
As China is poised to snatch the leadership from the U.S. in terms of being a film market—with a record of 48.7 percent of box-office growth—Sun said that partnership of U.S. and Chinese productions is the best approach to take advantage of the opportunity.
"'Edge of the World' has the potential to become a successful model for future U.S.-China co-productions and we look forward to working with Mark and Hawk, as well as our long-time partner China Film Group," Sun said.
