'Edge Of Tomorrow' Sequel Gets Writers and Director
The sci-fi film "Edge of Tomorrow" which was released in 2014 was a certified "sleeper" hit after it grossed $100 million in the US and $270 million worldwide, owing not only to box office sales but also to DVD and BluRay sales after the theater release. It gained popularity among sci-fi film fans that rumors about a possible sequel kept popping out online. Now, a report in Deadline has confirmed that the sequel has found its writers and is on the way to development. The report cited the writing duo of Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have signed on to work on the film's screenplay.
According to the report, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie who wrote the screenplay for the first film, is also in talks to join the team behind the sequel as producer. Previous reports initially said that McQuarrie was helming the film this time around but McQuarrie himself denied this. Taking to Twitter, he said that it was Doug Liman who was returning to direct the film, saying that "there's no Edge without Doug."
A report in Polygon particularly said that McQuarrie will be helping in the writing of the screenplay. He is also working on another "Mission Impossible" film also starring Tom Cruise, which is why reports about his directing this time around were not likely.
"Edge of Tomorrow" follows the story of a military officer, Major William Cage (Cruise) who has no combat experience but is sent into a mission that gets him killed instantly. He however finds himself in a time loop, where he gets a chance to work with a Special Forces agent Rita Rose Vrataski (Emily Blunt) to help in the war against the invading aliens.
According to a report in The Verge, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are rumored to be reprising their roles in the sequel, but neither actors have confirmed nor denied the news. Deadline also reported that the writers for the sequel have their work cut out for them as the first film was able to tie up any loose ends "efficiently."
