Egyptian Politicians Condemn Lack of Action Against Islamists Attacking Christian Copts, Slam US and European Indifference
The Egyptian Socialist Party expressed its grave disappointment at the complacency shown by authorities in their handling of issues dealing with the terrorization of Egypt's Christian Copts, in what many feel is an attempt to drag the country's religious minorities into a sectarian conflict.
It called on authorities for urgent intervention to arrest and hold accountable instigators of sedition and violence.
"Hatred, terrorism, and murder against Coptic citizens is an intolerable issue, and authorities are required to take immediate actions to arrest the instigators of such incidents, and not resort to merely formal reconciliation session. This is in addition to holding prompt and fair trials for all those involved," according to a statement issued by the party.
"Sectarian sedition against Copts is a weapon resorted to by traitors," the statement continued.
It also highlighted what it called the "lies and hypocrisy" of American and European political circles, who have long been vocal about the need to defend minorities, but now when violeance and attacks are taking place on a daily basis they have disregarded taking any action or condemning authorities with a stronger vocal rhetoric.
"We will not allow Egypt's Copts to be targeted for hatred, nor neglected by authorities that do not meet its citizens' demands and rights," the statement concluded.
Copts have been subjected to frequent attacks, since Morsi's dismissal on July 3, including the murder of four Copts in Dabaaya village, the assassination of a priest in North Sinai, and the burning of eight houses, 24 shops, and nine cars in Beni Ahmed village [Upper Egypt].
