Elvis Dumervil Arrested, Denver Broncos Player Faces Gun Assault Charges

Elvis Dumervil, the Denver Broncos defensive end, was arrested Saturday night along with another man in Miami Beach. He currently faces charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to reports.

Elvis Dumervil was arrested on Collins Avenue on South Beach that night, and initially held in prison that night for the felony. Later on the same night, he posted his $7,500 bond and was released from Dade County Jail, police detective Vivian Hernandez told ESPN.

In lieu of the serious charges the NFLer faces- in Florida, aggravated assault with a firearm is a third-degree felony, punishable with three to five years behind bars- Dumervil hired Harvey Steinberg, a defense attorney. Though the lawyer has said that he is waiting to release a full statement, the defensive end's agent, Marty Magid, said that Dumervil was falsely accused.

"No charges have been filed, no assault took place. It is likely that when the police have completed their investigation, no charges will be filed against Elvis," said the agent.

Steinberg, too, believes his client will be exonerated.

"No assault or aggravated assault took place," he told the Associated Press. "We're waiting for the investigation to be completed before we have further comment."

The Denver Broncos, who were prepared to lose starting linebacker D.J. Williams for six games because he violated the NFL banned substance policy, could be in trouble if they lose a defensive star like Dumervil. The 28-year-old defensive end is a two-time Pro Bowl player, and led the defense with 9-and-a-half sacks in 14 games last season.

A Broncos spokesman said in a statement that they, too, are waiting for the investigation to be completed before taking any action.

"This is a very serious allegation, and we will thoroughly review the details while the legal process runs its course," said the representative.

Other details of Dumervil's arrest were not immediately available.
