Emily Blunt Plays Gun-Toting FBI Agent in Brutal Drug Cartel Thriller 'Sicario' (VIDEO)

Emily Blunt is due to appear as an idealistic FBI agent in Denis Villenueve's crime drama "Sicario." The Golden Globe winning actress will appear alongside Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin in the Mexican drug cartel movie.

The newly released trailer for "Sicario," meaning "hitman" in Spanish, will see Blunt's character caught up in a dangerous mission to track the head of a drug syndicate all the way to Mexico.

As an optimistic law enforcement agent, Blunt is one of three FBI agents, including Oscar nominee Josh Brolin's character. She will cross the border on the hunt for a drug cartel leader only to find herself torn between allegiances without knowing whom to trust.

Exposed to the gritty world of international drug trafficking as part of a government task force, her character finds herself shocked at the brutal world ruled by a cartel boss beyond the lawless borders of Mexico.

Villenueve directed 2013's psychological thriller "Prisoners," and his experience shone through in the film's reception. The suspenseful thriller was given positive reviews during its international premiere at the May 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Blunt almost didn't get the part when Villenueve was put under pressure to change the female lead to a male character. However, the director, screenplay writer Taylor Sheridan and producers Black Label and Thunder Road stuck to the original script.

Blunt is no stranger to big guns and high voltage action films. She played tough army sergeant Rita Vrataski in the 2014 military sci-fi film, "Edge of Tomorrow," holding her own beside Tom Cruise.

She also essayed the role of a paranoid mother of a supernaturally gifted child who would do anything to keep her son safe from the world in 2012's "Looper," where she starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis.

"Sicario," a Lionsgate film shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico last summer, is due to premiere on Sept.18 in the U.S. theaters and on Nov. 6 in U.K. cinemas.
