European Evangelicals Join Launch of Religious Intolerance, Discrimination Platform

The European Evangelical Alliance, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, and Open Doors are joining forces to help launch the European Platform on Religious Intolerance and Discrimination.
Several religious groups including Catholics, Orthodox, Evangelicals, Jewish, Muslim and other organizations in Brussels, Belgium, were sent a letter of invitation to become a member of EPRID on Saturday. The Platform will be officially launched during a reception at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France on Sept. 26.

The organizers hope that the new platform will help raise the issue of Religious Intolerance and Discrimination higher on the agenda of European institutions.
“The Platform is convinced that this goal will only be achieved if religious groups and organizations will closely work together in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual encouragement,” states the invitation letter.
At the reception in Strasbourg, EPRID will present itself to member of the European Parliaments, European officials, and interested non-government organizations (NGOs). Furthermore, the first results of a study on the response of European Institutions to cases of religious intolerance and discrimination will be presented at the reception.
EPRID aims to conduct a “structured dialogue” between the Platform and European Institutions to discuss ways to improve European policy and practice. The Platform will not be involved in ecumenical activities.

An article on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, about European evangelical groups participating in the European Platform on Religious Intolerance and Discrimination incorrectly reported that the platform was launched by European evangelicals. The Christian Post confirmed with an executive board member of the Platform that the European Platform on Religious Intolerance and Discrimination is actually a coalition of religious and secular groups that some European Evangelical groups have been invited to join.
