Fab Five USA Women's Gymnastics Team Score Gold
The U.S. women's team has won the gold medal in the gymnastics final with a superior performance and score of 183.596 on Tuesday.
Russia scored 178.530 earning the silver medal, while Romania won the bronze with a total score of 176.414.
The "Fab Five" on the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's gymnastic team include Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross, and McKayla Maroney.
In accordance with the Olympic format, each team selects four gymnasts for each of the four segments of the final competition- the balance beam, uneven bars, vault and floor.
Douglas, 16, performed in each of the rotations. Wieber redeemed herself in the vaulting rotation alongside Maroney after Sunday's disappointing qualifying event.
"This is really important for a little redemption," Wieber, 17, told People magazine after winning the gold in the team event. "There was definitely disappointment [earlier this week] but in the end we ended up with this team medal, and I'm the happiest person right now."
Meanwhile, Maroney has cemented herself as the world's best vaulter, earning a score of 16.233 in the rotation.
However, during the second rotation, the competition between the U.S. and Russia was stiff. Following a solid third rotation on the balance beam, and continuing to deliver strong performances, the team pulled a 5-point victory and became heroes.
The victory by the Fab Five earned Americans their first gold medal in the event in 16 years.
In the meantime, Russia and Romania accepted their places, while the 2008 Beijing gold medalist finished in a dismal fourth place due to a low score on both the floor exercises and vault.
