Facebook Adds Snooze Button to Mute People, Groups or Pages for 30 Days

Facebook is rolling out a new feature called Snooze over the next few days, and it gives users the ability to temporarily opt out of getting notifications from a person, group or Facebook page for 30 days. It's a way to unfollow someone for a short time, and it can be easily undone, too.

"We've heard from people that they want more options to determine what they see in News Feed and when they see it," Facebook wrote in their news post on Friday, Dec. 15. Setting a friend, page or group on snooze lets users be free of their updates for 30 days, on the News Feed at least.

It's a way to temporarily get rid of someone on a user's news feed, without having to unfollow them. The person or group being snoozed will not get a notification either, Facebook said.

Facebook adds a helpful video showing users how to shut off a theoretical Jeremy P and his constant stream of updates about his cat. For those who already have the feature active in their accounts, AdWeek has provided a step-by-step guide on how to use it.

The first step a user needs to do is get to a post from the friend, page, or group he or she wants to mute for about a month. The user then needs to tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the post to bring up the menu.

A new option should appear, offering the choice to snooze the target for 30 days, as a way to "Temporarily stop seeing posts." This shows up between the Hide and Unfollow choices, so some accounts may still have a few days to wait before the feature shows up for their accounts.

Tapping the snooze option hides the post, and this replaces it with a notification that the user won't see posts from that source for 30 days. A handy Undo link at the top right corner is also added to let users change their minds.
