Faith-based movie 'War Room' tops US summer box office season, beats 'Compton'
There has been a turnaround of events in the movie world over the weekend as an unlikely contender took home the box office crown and kicked out the champions from its spot. According to The Week, low-budget faith-based film "War Room" took over the number one spot beating summer blockbusters like "Straight Outta Compton" and "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation." The twist to the end of the summer box office season surprised critics, fans and even the makers of the film.
The Christian drama is created by brothers, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, who are also responsible for other Christian movies like "Courageous," "Facing the Giants" and "Fireproof." According to CNN, they did what they can do best for the film—pray for it. One of the brothers also told ET last week that they have been praying for two years for the film and believed that the results of the film's standing is a huge answered prayer.
"We thought we had a shot at the top five but didn't expect to be near the top," Alex Kendrick told The Wrap. "The response has been incredible! We've been overwhelmed with people who were inspired and moved by the film."
According to box-office tracking firm Rentrack, "War Room" topped the four-day Labor Day weekend with $12.6 million in just over 1,500 theaters. With just a budget of $3.5 million, the PG-rated film earned a total of $27.9 million in just two weekends of release.
The top movie of the summer season is about couple Tony and Elizabeth, whose marriage, as seen in the trailer, is on the rocks. Their constant fighting and arguing pushed back from their sight the effect of it to their daughter. Change began to happen in their family life ever since Elizabeth met her newest client, Miss Clara, who introduced to her the "war room" and the power of praying.
