FCT: 25 Churches, Illegal Structures Demolished
The demolition of illegal structures embarked upon by the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) in September this year continued yesterday with the downing of about 25 churches and other illegal structures at the Area One, Gariki, Abuja.
The demolition exercise which, commenced at about 3:15pm, took place after the expiration of the short quit notices by the ministry.
The 25 churches demolished were part of the about 100 churches located at the Area One, Gariki Old Federal Secretariat.
When contacted on the short quit notices given by the ministry, the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister, Mr Kingsley Agha said the exercise was being handled by a presidential task force while noting that the said fence was obstructing movement of traffic.
At the Area one old secretariat, over six bulldozers were at work pulling down churches and other structures located in the area.
Worshippers, who were in praying sessions, were driven out by mobile policemen accompanying the bulldozers, dispersing them with tear gas canisters, while some of the residents of the area were seen making frantic efforts to move some valuable items to safety.
