‘Historic day’ or ‘undeniable harm’? 5 reactions to Senate passing same-sex marriage bill
SAGE
SAGE, an organization centered on advocacy for LGBT senior citizens, released a statement celebrating the passage of the same-sex marriage legislation.
The organization argued that the act will defend the rights of both same-sex married couples and interracial marriages, as well as other groups from the ongoing threat of bigotry.
SAGE CEO Michael Adams was quoted in the statement as saying that “we are keenly aware that the desire to cause us harm and to push our community back into the closet still exists.”
“That is why we are deeply heartened that the Senate has taken this critical step to ensure respect for marriages of same-sex couples across the country,” said Adams.
“Edie Windsor, marriage equality trailblazer, joined many thousands of our community’s elders who fought for the freedom to marry over many decades. Today’s vote vindicates their pioneering efforts and is an important step forward for equality.”
