Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana 2 Rematch Date Set for Sept. 13 on Showtime
Floyd Mayweather Jr. first fought Marcos Maidana in a welterweight unification match May 3 in Las Vegas. The rematch between Mayweather and Maidana has not yet been officially announced but the Showtime pay-per-view fight is slated for Sept. 13.
In a report by ESPN, Mayweather said during an interview with LaTen Media that he would be facing Maidana again in a rematch.
"Sept. 13, back in business, Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather, part II. And then in May, I'm fighting in May and I'll have a big surprise for ya'll," Mayweather said in the interview.
Despite what Mayweather said during the interview, no deal has been made yet according to Maidana's manager Sebastian Contursi. The two camps are still engaging in talks regarding the rematch and a decision is likely to be made in a few days' time. Maidana on the other hand, has already taken to Twitter about a possible rematch.
"REMATCH in the talks. Respect for @FloydMayweather man of his word, yet only fist talk in the ring. #LATINPOWER," Maidana tweeted.
If the deal pushes through, this will be Mayweather's second out of three fights in his six-fight deal with Showtime.
The figures for the first Mayweather-Maidana fight have not yet been released by Showtime boss Stephen Espinoza and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe. There hasn't been any word on whether they would release the figures when another fight between the two could be imminent.
The third fight is still up in the air but many speculate that Mayweather could finally get to fight Manny Pacquiao sometime next year. The fight between the two pound-for-pound fighters has been up in the air for so long that it is becoming highly unlikely.
For the fight to really happen, though, Mayweather would have to move back to HBO and sign a contract with them since Pacquiao's fights are broadcasted only on HBO.
