Floyd Mayweather Jr. quits boxing with 'nothing left to prove' after defeating Andre Berto

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has quit his boxing profession with "nothing left to prove" after he defeated Andre Berto in his final match in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has remained undefeated when he achieved his 49th victory in his boxing career on Saturday night. The 38-year-old champion boxer beat Andre Berto over 12 rounds and was able to retain his WBA and WBC welterweight titles via unanimous decision, according to Sky Sports.

"I've been in the sport of boxing my whole life and they say I'm wrong for saying I'm the best," Sky Sports quotes Mayweather's press statement after his match with Berto. "…But now the young fighters say, 'We want to be like Mayweather.' It's not cool to take punishment in the ring. I'm not perfect but I strived to be a perfectionist."

Mayweather first retired in September 2009 after defeating Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez. When asked if he wanted to come back for a 50th match, he declared his boxing career as "officially over" and said he was physically healthy and financially secure. He added that he had already broken "all records" in his 19 years in his boxing career.

"There's nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing," said Mayweather.

Mayweather has earned over $700 million in his boxing career. In his most recent fight, he was able to land 232 out of 410 punches, while Berto landed only 83 punches out of 495. The newly retired boxer said it was a good fight and described Berto as a difficult opponent.

Berto, on the other hand, claimed he pushed Mayweather to his limit, but his opponent was just better.
As expected, Mayweather's recent fight did not go by without a bit of controversy. The Bleacher Report says Mayweather ought to have a rematch with Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao before he ends his career because the fight with Berto was just "too easy."

Mayweather's 49-0 record is at par with Rocky Marciano, who also was undefeated, although his was just not as celebrated as his predecessor. Many fans are still clamoring for another fight with Pacquiao, which they claim would leave a clearer impression of Mayweather's status as a boxing champ.
