Floyd Mayweather News: Uncle Jeff Believes Nephew Will Stay Retired

Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s own uncle Jeff believes that the undefeated welterweight great will be staying retired for good.

"Money May" made the official announcement of his leaving the sport after almost two decades right after his September fight against former world champion Andre Berto. Mayweather won the fight by unanimous decision, marking his 49th career win, in an unblemished win-loss record.

26 of those victories ended via knockout. His recent retirement announcement is also Floyd Jr.'s second one in his career.

In 2007, Mayweather first walked away from the sport, right after his fight against British slugger Ricky Hatton. Mayweather won the bout by a tenth round knockout. Many of his fellow boxers, both active and otherwise, have shared their intent to in one way or another, have the chance to fight Mayweather.

Some of those names included "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya, undefeated middleweight knockout artist Gennady Golovkin, and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao. The main reason for the dissatisfaction and disbelief on Mayweather's retirement statement is that he is a win away from equaling the record of the great Rocky Marciano.

Many boxing observers believe that Mayweather himself could be enthused to make a comeback to accomplish this feat. However, his uncle Jeff foresees the exact opposite outcome.

In an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio, the elder Mayweather believes his nephew will be staying retired, given that he has nothing left to prove in the sport.

"At the end of the day, 49-0 or 50-0 is not gonna mean anything when you're talking about a guy who's been undefeated for nineteen years," Jeff Mayweather said in the interview. "It's never been done in no sport, that's the record that means something."

Jeff Mayweather adds that his nephew's claims of being "The Best Ever" is warranted by the numbers he has raked in so far.

"When Floyd says that he's the best ever, that's exactly what his numbers said, because he outdid everybody in every sense of the word of boxing," he said.
