'Forever' Premieres on ABC, New Series Promises Unique Take on Immortality

What if you could live forever?

This is the premise of ABC's new show, "Forever," starring Ioan Gruffudd. Make no mistake about it though, this is not another vampire series, but a crime procedural that tells the story of Gruffudd's character and his quest to find out what is causing him to escape death.

"Doctor Henry Morgan (Gruffudd), New York City's star medical examiner, has a secret. He doesn't just study the dead to solve criminal cases, he does it to solve the mystery that has eluded him for 200 years—the answer to his own inexplicable immortality," the official synopsis reads,

Though Henry Morgan does die, he always comes back—always in water, and naked. He is determined to figure out the mystery of why he can never die and has been doing so for over two centuries. According to Zap2it, his first death occurred several hundred years in the past when he was shot while protecting a slave aboard a ship. Now, he considers himself as sort of an expert on death, as he chronicles the different ways that he dies and how painful each one is.

In the season premiere, Dr. Morgan gets a call from a stranger who knows his secret and claims to be another immortal. He works as an NYC medical examiner together with Lucas Wan (Joel David Moore) who knows nothing about him. He also teams up with a recently widowed detective, Jo Martinez (Alana de La Garza) and the two head out to solve the city's murders. He also spends time with his mentor Abe (Judd Hirsch), the only one who knows about his secret.

"Forever" premieres at 10 p.m. ET/PT Monday on ABC and moves to its regular schedule on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting Sept. 23.
