Fort Knox Shooting Leaves 1 Man Dead
Police are on the hunt for a man suspected of killing a civilian working an Army base located in Fort Knox.
Reports indicate that the shooting took place on Wednesday around 6:00 p.m. Fort Knox police received a 911 call revealing that a person had been shot in the parking lot of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command (AHRC).
The victim was taken to the base's Ireland Army Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim's name is not being released until the victim's family can be notified of his death, but initial indications reveal that he was a civilian contracted to work for the Army at Fort Knox in a division that is responsible for handling Army personnel issue.
Chris Grey, an Army spokesman for criminal investigators, revealed that investigators currently believe that the shooting victim was targeted over "a personal incident and not a random act of violence."
Authorities stated that they are currently seeking a person of interest who is described as a 5-foot-9-inch African-American male who is thought to be traveling on a black Yamaha motorcycle.
After the shooting Fort Knox was placed on lockdown, but officials believe that the suspected shooter was able to leave the base before the lockdown took effect.
Fort Knox spokesman Kyle Hodges revealed that the base will remain on a heightened security alert until officials deem there are not any other potential threats.
Pentagon officials briefed Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who was "deeply concerned," a senior Defense Department official told the Associated Press Wednesday night.
The Army base is near the more famous Fort Knox, the U.S. Bullion Depository where a large percentage of America's gold reserves are stored.
The base is located about 35 miles outside Louisville and is home to over 40,000 soldiers and their families.
