4. The 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election
Democrat Stacey Abrams lost the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election to Republican Brian Kemp by a margin of 1.4 percentage points and around 50,000 votes. Four years later, as she seeks a rematch against him, Abrams has still not conceded that she lost the election.
When asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper in 2018 whether she thought that “Brian Kemp is not the legitimate governor-elect of Georgia,” Abrams responded, “The law as it stands says that he received an adequate number of votes to become the governor of Georgia and I acknowledge the law as it stands.” She added that “sometimes the law does not do what it should and that something being legal does not make it right.”
After Abrams elaborated on her concerns about the election, Tapper once again asked the candidate if Kemp was “the legitimate governor-elect.” She replied that “he is the person who won an adequate number of votes to become the governor.” Upon further pressing from Tapper, Abrams declined to use the word “legitimate” to describe her opponent, instead referring to him as “the legal governor of Georgia.”

Abrams was not the only Democrat to raise questions about the results of the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who remains in office to this day, insisted that “they stole it” when asked about the possibility of an Abrams loss as votes were being counted the week after the election. Brown’s comments are what prompted Tapper to ask Abrams if she viewed Kemp as the legitimate governor-elect.
