Free Donuts, National Doughnut Day 2013 Today
National Doughnut Day is sweeping the U.S. as bakeries prepare to dole out free confections in celebration of the breakfast favorite on Friday.
Celebrated each year on the first Friday in June, Doughnut Day began 75 years ago as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Furthermore, the Salvation Army has teamed up with Entenmann's baked good company for the past several years.
Through June 15, Entenmann's will donate $1 to the Salvation Army for every person who "likes" the Entenmann's Facebook Page.
Additionally, fans can enter the National Donut Day Sweepstakes by June 30 for a chance to win free Entenmann's donuts for a year.
Though the special fried sweet dough is spelled both doughnut and donut, there is no dispute over its popularity. The sweet snack is prepared in countless varieties that can be flavored, iced, filled and often come topped with sprinkles or other toppings.
Doughnut varieties are also divided into cake and various risen type doughnuts, and include shapes such as rings, balls, flattened spheres, twists, and many others.
Also in honor of National Doughnut Day, Dunkin Donuts is offering patrons a free donut with any purchase of a beverage on Friday, while supplies last.
Alternately, famed donut maker Krispy Kreme is offering free donuts with no purchase necessary.
With over 20 different donut offerings, Tim Hortons is offering one free donut with the use of a coupon and any purchase on National Doughnut Day.
National chains are not the only stores celebrating National Doughnut Day 2013. Numerous smaller donut vendors across the country are celebrating by offering free treats.
On Twitter, National Donut Day became a trending topic Friday with many users posting about their celebrations.
"Happy #NationalDonutDay," started Akane. "I just kicked off the work day by sampling @DunkinDonuts donut bacon sandwich. Verdict: surprisingly not bad."
Daniel wrote, "Today is National Donut Day and I plan on celebrating multiple times today."
