Free Xbox One, 360 Games for January 2016: 'Deus Ex,' 'Killer Instinct,' 'Zheros,' 'DiRT Showdown'

Microsoft has recently announced a new batch of games that will be free for Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners on January 2016. These free games will be available through its Games with Gold program.

Two free games will be available for Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners each. But because of Microsoft's Backward Compatibility, Xbox One owners will be able to play the two Xbox 360 titles on their consoles, too.

"Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition" (Xbox One, Jan. 1 to 31)

"Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition," which is priced at $40, will be available for Xbox One owners for the whole month of January.

"Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition" is a "brutal" fighting game that emphasizes combos rather than perfect timing and twitch reflexes. The Ultra Edition gives players access to all eight characters of Season 1 and a playable version of the 1994 title "Killer Instinct Classic." It also provides players with an additional eight costumes and 16 character accessory packs.

"DiRT Showdown" (Xbox 360, Jan. 1 to 15)

For Xbox 360 owners, "DiRT Showdown" (regular price: $15) will be free to download starting on the New Year until Jan. 15. "DiRT Showdown" provides gamers with an off-road racing rush. It is part of the popular "Colin McRae Rally" series.

"Zheros" (Xbox One, Jan. 16 to Feb. 15)

"Zheros" is an indie beat-'em-up game. It has been praised for its art style. "Zheros" will be available for Xbox One owners to download for free starting Jan. 16 until Feb. 15.

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution" (Xbox 360, Jan. 16 to 31)

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution" is a cyberpunk role-playing game. The title has won multiple awards and is known for its multipathed gameplay. "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" (regular price: $15) will be available for free starting Jan. 16 to the end of the month on Jan. 31.

Xbox Live Gold members can still avail of "The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing" for the Xbox One, as well as "Sacred 3" and "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising" for the Xbox 360 until the end of December 2015. Another game, "Thief," is free to download on the Xbox One now until Jan. 15.
