Fuller Theological Seminary will explore the role of spirituality in modern films, addressing todays social problems in a unique and creative forum for the public.
Unique in its focus and purpose, the 12th annual City of the Angels Film Festival sponsored by Fuller Theological Seminary, Family Theater Productions, and many other organizations will explore the role of comedy in film, while presenting thought-provoking pieces that probe into the serious social issues we face today.
Held at the Directors Guild of America in California, the film festival draws filmmakers, theologians, and the public together in a common forum for discussion. Titled Divine Comedy: Spirited Laughter, this years festival includes comedy short films and full feature productions such as Duck Soup, Annie Hall, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and Life is Beautiful.
Each film explores how people deal with severe circumstances and face the hardships of life with hope. Not only will participants be challenged, they will be inspired.
For twelve years, the City of Angels Film Festival has sought out the intersections of film, faith, and the city, said Robert Johnston, Fuller Seminarys Reel Spirituality Institute Co-director.
Again this year it will showcase 10 outstanding movies, inviting urban dwellers to probe the potential of comedy and laughter for renewing the spirit.
Post-screening discussions will be led by panels including filmmakers, critics, clergy, and academics. The event is called one of the top 10 things to do in Los Angeles, by the Los Angeles Times, and draws participants from around the world.
The festival will be held from Friday to Sunday, October 21-23. On Friday, Fullers Reel Spirituality Institute hosts Reality: Fact or Fiction? a one-day conference on the recent rise in public interest in documentaries and reality television.
Established in 1992, the City of the Angels Film Festival focuses on films that raise social and religious issues, with the goal to renew the spirit of the city. Fuller Theological Seminarys Reel Spirituality Institute is dedicated to artistic ministry, and offers masters and doctoral degrees in theology, culture, arts, and worship.
