Galaxy Book vs. iPad Pro: Samsung and Apple Rivalry Goes Over to the Tablet Scene

With the announcement of Samsung Galaxy 2-in-1 tablets, the rivalry of the South Korean company and Apple soon became more than just about smartphones.

On Monday, Samsung unveiled three tablets, namely the Galaxy Tab S3, Galaxy Book 10, and Galaxy Book 12. While the Android Nougat-run Galaxy Tab S3 has some ample specs, what's giving Apple's iPad Pro a run for its money are the Galaxy Book variants. Probably what made it a tough contender in the tablet scene is its promise to perform like a PC would do.

The Galaxy Book has two variants - one with a 10.6-inch screen size and a bigger 12-inch tablet. Much like the Microsoft Surface Pro, these Samsung tablets are meant to be attached to a keyboard and supports the use of the company's S Pen.

On the other hand, the iPad Pro has a 12-inch variant as well that was released back in 2015, while the newer iPad Pro version that has a 9.7-inch screen launched later in March 2016.

Operating System

Staying true to its promise of performing like a PC, the Samsung Galaxy Books run with Windows 10 operating systems, while the iPad Pros were originally introduced with iOS 9. With the recent software updates from Cupertino, these Apple tablets can be upgraded to the latest iOS 10.2. It is important to note though that iOS is Apple's software for its mobile devices.

Chipset and Memory Capacity

Another promising area for the Samsung Galaxy Books are its chipsets. Samsung revealed that these productivity-focused tablets will be powered by Kaby Lake processors.

According to reports, the smaller Galaxy Book will get an Intel Core m3 processor that has a dual-core 2.6-gigahertz rig. On the other hand, the bigger Galaxy Book 12 will run on an Intel Core i5 with two cores functioning at a whopping 3.1 GHz.

Meanwhile, both iPad Pro variants are equipped with Apple A9X chipsets with dual-core 2.3 GHz clock speed.

The iPad Pro variants both offer internal memory options that range from 32 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Book 10 will offer 64 GB and 128 GB pre-packed read-only memory. The Galaxy Book 12 has bigger internal space of either 128 GB or 256 GB.

Naturally, Apple products do not have the card slots for memory expansion which the Galaxy Books have to accommodate up to 256 GB extra memory.

In terms of random access memory, the iPad Pro 9.7 comes in last with just 2 GB while the 12-inch iPad Pro and Galaxy Book 10 have the same 4 GB. The Galaxy Book 12 offers as much as 8 GB RAM but will also have a standard option of 4 GB.

Conclusion

While Samsung is relatively a newcomer in the field of productivity-focused tablets, they definitely did make an entrance as they introduced not just pro tablets, but stuff that aim to provide the performance that laptops or PCs can give.

The current iPad Pros are still ample entry-level productivity-focused tablets. However, Samsung's recent presence at the Mobile World Congress this week will hopefully convince Apple to shed some light on their plans for their iPad line.

Samsung has not yet revealed the pricing and retail release of their new tablets. But many are expecting the devices to arrive next month.
