Galaxy Nexus Released in UK, Trumps iOS 5 in Benchmark Tests

The new Samsung Galaxy Nexus launched in the United Kingdom this past week, and it is expected to be released in the United States within the next few weeks.

The Galaxy Nexus is the official flagship device for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

With the release of the smartphone overseas, AnandTech took the liberty of benchmarking the Galaxy Nexus by comparing it to the iPhone 4S running on the new iOS 5.

Technology website 9to5Mac reported that the processor inside the Galaxy Nexus is not ground breaking; however, the new ICS software outdid Apple’s iOS in some key areas during the benchmarking.

The Galaxy Nexus browser proves to be quicker after compared to Apple's version. The Samsung smartphone also does a better job loading up JavaScript, not only outdoing the iPhone 4S, but also CNet’s smartphone of the year, the Motorola Droid Razr.

Galaxy Nexus lost to the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S when it came to GPU loading, which is limited on the smartphone because it includes the slower SGX 540. Therefore, Apple’s devices are more efficient for gaming.

The Galaxy Nexus runs very smooth compared to older Android devices and even though Google is activating 550,000 Android devices a day, the company is still behind Apple’s iOS in total activations at 200 million.

Samsung and Google released a 60-second video advertisement on Friday that shows actors using the Galaxy Nexus and enjoying some of ICS’s new features, including voice-activated typing, Face Unlock, Android Beam and Google+ with Hangouts for easy social networking.

The Galaxy Nexus is expected to launch as a Verizon exclusive in the U.S. sometime soon, but the carrier has set no official release date.
