Game Developers Choice Awards 2017 News: 'No Man's Sky' Wins Innovation Award but Devs Missed Accepting the Trophy
Developers from Hello Games won the Innovation Award at the recently concluded Game Developers Conference for their game "No Man's Sky." However, no one was there to accept the trophy.
The awards night took place at the West Hall of the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California on Wednesday.
Hello Games had the most understandable moment at the GDC Awards. Developers from the indie video game studio who were sent to attend the event were clearly not expecting any recognition that night.
Reports have it that when GDC Awards 2017 host Tim Schafer announced "No Man's Sky" got Hello Games the Innovation Award, no one was there to get on the stage and collect the trophy. Polygon even shared that after a while of waiting for someone to receive the recognition but to no avail, Schafer joked, "Going once... going twice..."
It turned out Hello Games code lead Innes McKendrick and the rest of the studio's party who attended the event were just in the building the entire time but were in a different room and getting some dinner.
To everyone who knows what happened with "No Man's Sky" since its release would understand why they were not prepared or expecting to receive any award that night.
Shortly after missing their time to shine, McKendrick went to Twitter and explained their absence, saying they were eating dinner and "talking about how we definitely wouldn't win an award."
McKendrick followed up with another social media post, this time with a wacky group selfie saying, "We're here now? Hi?" However, it looked like they were too late to get back to the event and the ceremony had already moved on.
The Hello Games lead code admitted that what happened was embarrassing through a Twitter reply to the Game Developers Conference's general manager Meggan Scavio. To their defense, Hello Games founder Sean Murray also reacted through the social media platform and said they should have been informed about getting an award beforehand.
