'Game of Thrones' Prequel News: HBO CEO Gives Brief Update on Status

With "Game of Thrones" almost coming to an end, HBO is looking to expand its universe and create more content based on the popular fantasy series.

As previously reported, HBO commissioned different writers to come up with scripts for possible "Game of Thrones" spin-offs or prequels. All of the writers will be working with author George R. R. Martin to some degree.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler recently gave an update on the status of the prequels to Variety. While he did not delve into anything specific, he was very optimistic about what he has already seen.

"Other than to say it's a fantastic group of writers and talent, most of whom have lived inside the Thrones eco-system so are very, very familiar with its intricacies," he said, refusing to spoil anything else. "I think we will find with this embarrassment of [writing] riches an exciting property for us to moves forward with. We are looking some things, I have read a couple of early bibles and I'm excited about what I've seen."

There are currently five different spin-offs or prequels in the works, but there is a high chance that only one will get the green light. Additionally, it has been said that the priority of the network right now is the final season of the Emmy Award-winning series.

The stories, timelines, people, and places from the "Game of Thrones" universe being developed are still unknown, but it is safe to say that none of them involve Robert's Rebellion. This is because the whole story of Robert's Rebellion would have already been public knowledge by the time the prequel makes it on air.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys previously revealed that the prequel or spin-off will likely hit the small screen a year after the final season concludes. Given that, it looks like fans will have a long wait ahead.
