'Game of Thrones' Season 4 Spoilers: Pedro Pascal Hints Oberyn's Secret Weapon Against The Mountain
"Game of Thrones" returns to HBO this Sunday after a week-long break with the brand new episode "The Mountain and the Viper."
The highly anticipated installment to season four of the hit series will reveal the outcome of Tyrion Lannister's (Peter Dinklage) trial-by-combat. The fate of the wrongly accused Lannister sibling lies in the hands of his unexpected ally, Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne, also known as the Viper.
Pedro Pascal, who portrays Oberyn on "GOT," recently discussed the combat scene and even hinted at what the Viper's secret weapon could be. First, Pascal admitted that the odds are against his character when battling the dreaded Gregor Clegane aka The Mountain, portrayed by Icelandic strongman Hafthor Bjornsson.
"He's nearly a foot taller than me. He's 6-foot-9, I'm 5-foot-11," the actor told TVGuide.com. "I think he's nearly three times my weight. He's 420 pounds of muscle. It felt like I was with a giant. And then put him in the armor, and his sword alone was exactly my height. It was incredibly intimidating but also really delightful because I think that the character Oberyn really relishes that kind of challenge."
Prince Oberyn of Dorne, also known as The Red Viper, will have an opportunity to avenge the brutal rape and murder of his sister Elia and her children many years ago at The Mountain's hands during the trial-by-combat.
"Well, somehow he's gotten that nickname 'the viper' from fighting," Pascal teased, offering a hint at how his character may prove victorious up against The Mountain.
In addition to avenging his sister, Oberyn is also able to exact revenge on Lannister family that he hates so much, Pascal explained.
"It's not hard for Oberyn to recognize that Tyrion is the smartest man in the room," the actor said. "Oberyn is not a fan of the Lannisters, so it's not very hard for him to see through the trial and recognize what's really going on. And while he has his own agenda, because he wants nothing but to face The Mountain himself and kill him, to be able to do that on behalf of Tyrion is an extra 'f--- you' to the Lannisters because he recognizes to Tyrion their hypocrisy and their corruption."
"The Mountain and the Viper" airs on HBO Sunday, June 1 at 9 p.m. EST.
