Gardner Hitless as Yankees Beat the Blue Jays
This is the first time Gardner has played since last year.
With Major League Baseball already in the swing of things thanks to spring training, the New York Yankees welcomed back outfielder Brett Gardner.
The 32-year-old suffered a wrist injury a little over a year ago and finally made his return on the field – to the delight of Yankee fans.
Considered as one of the fastest players in the league, Gardner has made his name as an impressive base stealer and is efficient while at bat.
However, in his long awaited return, the Yankees faced the Toronto Blue Jays and Gardner failed to make anything happen in his two at-bats.
Despite missing on his time on the plate, this was a great sign for the Yankees who welcomes Gardner back in the group as New York's 1-2 punch of Jacoby Ellsbury and Gardner make for one of the better duos in the league.
The game was scoreless after the first inning and the Blue Jays failed to capitalise in the second inning.
When New York had their turn at bat, they made the most of their chance in the second as they scored two runs to finally take the lead.
The game was relatively quiet in the following innings before Toronto finally scored in the top of the eighth to trim the deficit to half.
Unfortunately, they could not get the game-tying run as the Yankees took the win and improved to 5-8 at the time.
Speaking to reporters, Gardner told reporters how he felt after the game, and he said: "The results weren't great, but I felt good."
Most impressive was Starlin Castro who was recently acquired from the Chicago Cubs. Castro had a hit that drove to the right and then made a catch against Kevin Pillar's pop fly.
His performance impressed Yankees manager Joe Girardi, claiming: "I think he's doing pretty good. We've been pleased with him so far at second base. I think he's done a really good job, worked extremely hard. The transition for him I don't think is going to be a problem."
