'Gears of War 4' Will Set The Stage for New Trilogy, Says Dev
The Coalition, developer of the "Gears of War 4," revealed in a recent interview that the upcoming third-person shooter will serve as the springboard from which a larger universe will be launched. The interview delved in general on the developer's approach to storytelling.
Game Informer had a chance to talk exclusively with The Coalition Creative Director Chuck Osieja and Studio Head Rod Fergusson. The publication will feature "Game of Wars 4" as its cover story for April 2016.
"For us it was 'OK, moving forward, how do we set up a foundation for not just a trilogy, but for a much larger universe," said Osieja.
"We talked about things like alternate planets and things like that [but] we wanted to stay on Sera because we wanted to have the opportunity revisit old places and use specific weapons, to have these touchstones to the past," added Fergusson. "That's when we decided 'let's go all the way forward, let's put enough time in and have a new generation of heroes and create JD Fenix, Marcus's son."
JD Fenix is one of the new game's protagonists. Fergusson explained that although there are new characters in this game, the theme will be the same as the first "Gears of War" title, that of survival and horror. He said "Gears of War 4" will focus on JD Fenix and his friends who must survive the night in the woods. The game's story will start in the afternoon and end in the morning.
Previously, "Gears of War 4" released new details and screenshots. The game's resolution and frame rate have also been confirmed to be 1,080p 30 frames per second (fps) for the single player campaign and 60 fps in multiplayer mode.
"Gears of War 4" is expected to have its beta this spring and release in holiday 2016. It's currently pegged as an Xbox One exclusive title, although the developer previously hinted at the possibility of PC version.
