'Ghosted' Season 1 News: Premiere Gets Mixed Reviews and Good Viewer Ratings
Fox's new comedy series "Ghosted" premiered its first-ever season last Oct. 1 and it was met with mixed reviews from critics. But ultimately, the numbers – aka viewer ratings – somehow favored the comedic rookie.
"Ghosted," as its title implies, tackles the topic of supernatural beings in a situational comedy format. Its cast is led by Craig Robinson and Adam Scott who play a former LAPD officer named Leroy Wright and a former Stanford professor named Max Jennifer, respectively.
The show takes on a very familiar formula for horror comedy materials where the main characters hound one another with arguments if a ghost was true or not. In this show, Leroy plays the skeptic role while Max, despite his academe genius, believes supernatural beings exist.
The two are stuck with each other after both were recruited by an organization called The Bureau Underground. Their task is to document and investigate every bizarre or paranormal activity reported within Los Angeles.
With that concept, several reviews could not help but liken "Ghosted" to the classic TV series "X-Files" where it had its own comedic twists.
As for the show's premiere, Indiewire commented that the show opened with so much backstory to tell and characters to introduce – all of which needed to be done in 22 minutes. However, the chemistry of Robinson and Scott was undeniably what made the show funny and interesting.
The same thing was noted on Deadline's review. While the show's content made it another "paranormally pedestrian" show, the compatibility between the two main cast members and what made their characters click despite being polar opposites was highly evident.
Now, the question is if these two stars can continuously carry the already familiar story-telling and show format with the help of their supporting cast members, including Ally Walker, Adeel Akhtar, and Amber Stevens West.
Meanwhile, according to TV by the Numbers, "Ghosted" also performed pretty well in terms of viewer ratings. For the 18-49 demographic, the show gathered 3.56 million viewers scoring them a 1.4 rating based on statistics provided by The Nielsen Company.
"Ghosted" airs every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. EDT on FOX.
