Savage and Fishel will be hugely popular choices for the new show, having gathered millions of fans across the globe with their previous performances of Cory and Topanga in the original series.

The sequel, Girl Meets World, will pick up on the story of the couple's 13 year old daughter, Riley Matthews.

The main role of Riley in the new series has yet to be cast – but whoever it is, it can be certain that Corey and Topanga will play significant parts as her parents, and will be sure to be immediate fan favorites once again.

It is unsure whether Rider Strong, who played Corey's best friend Shawn Hunter in Boy Meets World, will be part of the new show.

However, Savage is confirmed, and he announced that he had signed up to reprise the role of Corey Matthews via his Twitter account, to which he posted, "I'm going to be a father! Well, on TV at least. The "Boy Meets World" sequel is officially happening!"

Fishel also confirmed that she would be a mother on the show by posting a blog on her Tumblr account. She explained that the huge fan-base from the original show had helped the new series get off the ground, as the rumors of the new Girl Meets World series sparked mass positive responses.

Fishel wrote: "First of all, let me say that you, the fans of 'Boy Meets World,' have been awesome. You, yes, even YOU, are the reason that 'Girl Meets World' WILL BE MADE."

Disney has also confirmed the news to E!, and has also added that the original producer from the Boy Meets World series, Michael Jacobs, will also be back – meaning fans will know what to expect when the new franchise airs.

A rep for Disney has said to E!: "The pilot is still in the very early stages of development with creator and executive producer Michael Jacobs, Emmy Award-winning creator/producer behind 'Boy Meets World,' 'My Two Dads' and 'Charles In Charge,' among others."

Fishel added, "I do not know how many BMW cast members will be returning for GMW, or how often they may appear if and/or when they do appear," she wrote.

She added, "It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages. It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages. For those of you who knew and loved BMW, please allow this show to evolve as well. Stick with us. Give us a chance."
