'Girls' Star Jemima Kirke Joins Netflix Drama 'Maniac' with Emma Stone, Jonah Hill

The upcoming Netflix drama series "Maniac" adds "Girls" actress Jemima Kirke for a recurring role. She will join stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as filming gets underway in New York.

Details on who Kirke will play in the series have been kept under wraps. But "Maniac" is based on a 2014 Norwegian TV show about two mentally-troubled individuals (Stone and Hill) who live in their own fantasy world.

Kirke is the third confirmed guest for the Netflix show. Justin Theroux ("The Leftovers") also boarded the production in August. He will reportedly play an alcoholic mad scientist named James Mantleray.

Julia Garner will also recur on the show for a still-undisclosed role. Garner recently made waves as Ruth in the Netflix drama "Ozarks" with Jason Bateman.

The dark comedy series is expected to have 10 episodes. Cary Fukunaga, who received critical-acclaims for directing "True Detective" season 1, will direct all episodes of "Maniac."

Fukunaga is also an executive producer of the show, as are Stone and Hill. Patrick Somerville adapted the scripts from the original series.

Stone and Hill play patients of a mental asylum in the show. The cast and crew have been seen filming around New York City since August but these scenes are said to take place in the characters' imagination only.

Originally ordered to series in January 2016, "Maniac" is a reunion of sorts for Stone and Hill after working on the 2007 feature film "Superbad." These aren't first projects for the stars on the small screen, however, as Stone starred in the defunct show "Drive" with Nathan Fillion also in 2007 on FOX. Hill, on the other hand, starred on "Campus Ladies" in 2006 on Oxygen.

Filming of "Maniac" will continue until the end of November. The show, however, won't premiere on the streaming site until 2018. Netflix has not yet announced a confirmed air date.
