GizmoSlip Delivers on Drop Tests, Smartphone Giveaways

Drop test videos for devices such as smartphones and tablets have become somewhat of a YouTube phenomenon, according to the editors of GizmoSlip.com, who have taken this idea and turned it into an interesting website.

Packed with exploding iPhones and shattered screens, GizmoSlip specializes in reviewing devices and then running them through a drop test. However, if the machine survives the fall, it is given away to lucky fans of the site.

“Launching a YouTube channel can be quite a challenge,” Darren Dyk and Brandon Baldwin, editors of Gizmoslip.com, told The Christian Post. “We want to give people a reason to check out the rest of the videos and get to know us better. We just gave away a Nook Tablet, and we are currently giving away an iPhone 4 and GoPro and will continue to giveaway any devices that survive.”

The site recently launched a drop test video for the iPhone 4S where it took a 3 foot fall. Upon landing, the device’s delicate glass backing shattered proving that as trendy as Apple’s products can look, they are clearly not made for durability.

“Apple makes great quality products but they focus on style (i.e. iPhone 4s’ glass that extends edge to edge, as well as front to back) rather than durability,” said the editors. “Their devices feel solid in your hand, but we all know that glass shatters all too easily.”

In order to avoid accidentally breaking an iPhone, customers normally buy protection cases, but this takes away from Apple’s original intention of fans owning a beautiful looking handset. “Why make a beautiful device only for 90 percent of consumers to cover it up anyway,” they added. “We would much prefer if they made their devices durable enough that consumers didn’t feel like they had to have a case. Manufacturers shouldn’t sacrifice durability for style when, with a little extra forethought, the can have both.”

Smartphones normally test better than tablets due to the difference in size, according to the editors. However, the new Barnes and Noble Nook seemed to hold up well in Gizmoslip’s test and the site is now giving the device away.

Along with the Nook holding up, Darren of Gizmoslip informed CP about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 withstanding a grueling drop test as well. The site also plans to test the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the near future.

In order for a device to hold up during drop testing, including glass parts such as screens and encasings should be avoided. “Obviously, a plastic screen is going to be more durable than glass, but so far all the devices we’ve tested have had glass screens,” they said. “In this case, the most important thing is the bezel that protects the screen. Plastic bezels absorb and distribute impacts more efficiently than metal.”

Fans of the site get to enjoy the device giveaways when a smartphone or tablet passes the drop test, but when it fails they also get to see the team at Gizmoslip dispose of it properly. “We giveaway devices if the survive the drop test, but we destroy them spectacularly if they fail.”

A recently tested iPhone 4S received the hole-in-one treatment as the team at Gizmocrunch posted a video on YouTube titled iPhone 4S Golf Swing, where they show the handset being demolished by a golf club’s swing in slow motion. The device instantly shattered into many small pieces and fans are left with an entertaining YouTube experience.

The GizmoSlip team also is currently at work on another YouTube channel called Beyond Slow Motion, where they explore what the world looks like when its slowed down to 6900 frames per second.
