Global AIDS Prayer Partnership Mobilizing Prayer on World AIDS Day

A coalition of Christian organization and networks is asking for praying people throughout the world to remember the many millions who are suffering and dying due to AIDS. The Global AIDS Prayer Partnership (GAPP), which launched in July 2002, has issued a Call to Prayer and Action for World AIDS Day on Dec. 1.
According to recent statistics, between 2 and 4 million people in the world have of AIDS in 2004, and between 35 to 45 million people are living with HIV/AIDS with around 4 to 7 million people newly infected with HIV in this year alone.
In 1988, the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) launched World AIDS Day in 1988 to turn attention to the worst humanitarian crisis in history, however GAPP reports that the Church has not been very visible on this day in the past.

An April 2002 George Barna study of the Church of the United States found that only eight percent of born-again Christians would most definitely respond to the needs of widows and orphans due to AIDS in Africa.
As a way to respond to these findings and the pandemic, the Global AIDS Prayer Partnership was launched in July of that same year.
Now more than two years later, the Global AIDS Prayer Partnership is continuing in its effort and has issued a Call to Prayer and Action, together with a written prayer that can be downloaded online at www.PraytoEndAIDS.com.
In remembrance of World AIDS Day, Churches are being encouraged to hold a special prayer vigil on Dec. 1 and use a specially prepared bulletin also available at the website. The Global AIDS Prayer Partnership believes that “as the Church of Jesus Christ unites for prayer and action, God will be faithful to His promises of 2 Chronicles 7:14 and heal the nations from this scourge.”
Currently, the GAPP network includes the Mission America Coalition, World Vision, International Prayer Council, National Prayer Committee, National Pastors Prayer Network, and Concerts of Prayer Greater New York.
