'Godzilla' Release Date News: Anime Film to Debut on Netflix Later This 2017

Streaming giant Netflix announced on Sunday that the animated "Godzilla" film is heading to the service. Netflix confirmed that the movie will start airing later this year.

Titled "Godzilla" and produced by Japanese anime studio Polygon Pictures, the movie will have its debut on Netflix after its TOHO theatrical release in Japan this 2017. After Polygon Pictures works with Netflix to stream the film globally, TOHO and Netflix will then work together for the coordinated theatrical premiere of the film outside of Japan.

According to its creators, the animated film will "offer an epic re-imagining of the Godzilla world of the future." Recently, the official "Godzilla" Twitter account posted two concept images from the film, featuring outlandishly lush flora. While information about the movie's story remains scarce, the new images created by "Godzilla's" art director seem to confirm speculations that the movie will take place in a futuristic setting, on a planet that is not Earth.

The synopsis for the film reveals that "Godzilla" will open with a strange fountain of water erupting in the bay on a peaceful day in Japan, causing everyone to panic. While the public suspects that the eruption was caused by some volcanic activity, one executive thinks otherwise. His worst nightmare becomes a reality when a monstrous creature suddenly emerges from the sea and begins to wreak havoc in the city.

"As the government scrambles to save the citizens, a rag-tag team of volunteers cuts through a web of red tape to uncover the monster's weakness and its mysterious ties to a foreign power. But time is not on their side — the greatest catastrophe to ever befall the world is about to evolve right before their very eyes," reads the synopsis.

More updates about the film are expected to be unveiled at AnimeJapan 2017, which takes place from March 23 to 26.
