GoPro Hero 5 vs Xiaomi Yi 2 4K: Which Action Camera is Better? Specs and Features Compared
An action camera is one of the go-to essentials for the active, athletic, and outdoorsy type of people. With more and more people giving in to the hype and necessity, electronic companies adapt to cater to the needs of the public. GoPro is perhaps the most famous manufacturer in this department, but how will it fare against Xiaomi, being a lesser-known brand in the action camera field?
Camera Modules
We compared Xiaomi's Yi 2 4K Action Camera with GoPro's upcoming Hero 5. The GoPro camera is rumored to be packing a sensor capable of recording in at least 4K resolution, and goes up to 8K. It can also record in at least 30 frames per second, topping in at 60 fps for the highest resolution. There would also be a 120 fps option, which will be supported in 1080p Full HD.
The GoPro Hero 5 will also feature an image stabilizer at lower resolutions. For the processor, it will use the Snapdragon 800.
Xiaomi's Yi 2 4K camera uses an Ambarella chipset for its main processor. It then packs a Sony IMX377 12-megapixel sensor with video recording of up to 4K resolution. It sports an f/2.8 aperture and a 155-degree wide-angle lens. It is capable of shooting 30 fps in 4k, with up to 120 fps for slow motion videos in 1080p.
It also has the ability to capture time lapse videos, as well as shooting photos while video recording is ongoing. There are other modes as well, such as a timer, a burst mode, a continuous loop, and other advanced technologies.
Design
The two devices, having portability and function being the main selling points, sport a very similar design language. Both devices are rectangular in shape, with a touch-capable LCD display panel found at the back. The Xiaomi Yi 2 4K includes a tripod screw mount, whereas the GoPro Hero series is yet to see the nifty feature.
Sensors and Connections
Xiaomi's Yi 2 4K Action Camera has better sensors and connections outright. It has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, a Low Light Sensor, a G-Sensor, and a microphone. The GoPro Hero 5, however, is rumored to ditch the Wi-Fi chip in favor of the Bluetooth feature. One of the advantages of the GoPro camera is the rumored inclusion of GPS technology.
Battery and Other Features
The GoPro Hero 5 will reportedly feature voice command operation. It will also be waterproof in up to 60 meters of water. The Xiaomi Yi 2 4K Action Camera will also be waterproof in up to 40 meters. It features a Lens Distortion Correction for the wide-angle lens, as well as EV compensation.
The GoPro Hero 5 will pack a 1220 mAh battery, which would last very long with the new power-efficient chipset and connections. The Xiaomi Yi 2 4K packs a bigger 1400 mAh, which will be able to last a while longer.
Price and Release Date
The GoPro Hero 5 is expected to launch along with the GoPro Karma Drone on September 19. The price is also expected to sit somewhere between $450 and $550. The Xiaomi Yi 2 4K has been out for a while now, packing beast specs for a more budget-friendly price tag of $250.
