Gospel Music Channel to Address 'First Ladies' of Churches

WASHINGTON – Beginning this Sunday, 75 "first ladies" from some of the most influential African-American churches across the nation will be gathering in Washington, D.C. as "powerful Christian women." The Gospel Music Channel will be there as their exclusive television network.

Held every year on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, the third annual First Ladies Summit will feature White House and faith-based speakers to discuss matters of faith, family and community, including the recent pressure on the cable television industry to provide family-friendly tiers, to a crowd of pastors' wives.

"This delegation of powerful Christian women exercises tremendous influence over hundreds of thousands of women all over the country," said Shelley Henderson, founder and director of the summit, in a released statement. "They (first ladies) are leaders in spiritual and domestic matters, and are proud to be a part of leading the demand for clean, quality programming."

This year, the three-day event is themed "Celebrating Women in Leadership" and on Tuesday, the Gospel Music Channel is sponsoring a breakfast to "empower already empowered women," as DeEtta West, director of ministry partnership for the channel, described to The Christian Post.

"These are some great women of God," said West about the participating first ladies. "We're honored that we're able to go there and have the opportunity to share with other women of like mind."

Recently ranked by television expert Jack Myers as the top T.V. network for the emotional connection it has with viewers, the Gospel Music Channel currently airs in 1,300 cities and reaches 3.5 million subscribers. West will be introducing the channel to the audience and speaking on "quality programming."

"It was important that Gospel Music Channel be included in this exclusive
Summit," said Henderson.

Describing the goal for this first time event for the channel, West said, "My goal is to encourage these influential women to go back to their churches, communities and husbands, who are also very influential, to encourage the people, and to push the cable operators to add us to their line up.

"We're in a world where we need something to turn the hearts, the minds and the lives of people to help bring a place of hope."

Jointly Fit Ministries International is the main sponsor of the First Ladies Summit with the Gospel Music Channel serving as one of many sponsors.
