Grants Awarded to Support Family Oriented Projects
CHICAGO The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America reported spending $183,674 in grants to support a variety of family oriented projects both domestically and internationally. 50 recipients were chosen this year for job training, youth mentoring, health care, education enhancement, domestic violence prevention, prison and after-prison support and AIDS prevention.
"We have a real commitment to strengthening families and communities," said Doris E. Strieter, grants program administrator, Women of the ELCA.
Among the 50 awarded grants, 10 were designated to international programs at a total of $61,543; 6 of the grants were given to programs in Africa.
"In Africa it's important. Because of AIDS, there are a lot of widows who are left without income," Strieter said.
