Gregory Slayton, Author of 'Be a Better Dad Today!' Talks Importance of Fatherhood
Gregory Slayton is a former Ambassador, businessman, and professor, but his most prized position is that of being a father of four. His new book, "Be a Better Dad Today!" is set to become a national bestseller and features a foreword by Chuck Colson. Slayton spoke with The Christian Post about the book and fatherhood.
"My father was a United States Naval officer before he abandoned our family," Slayton said. "I was not interested in being a father until I became a Christian in college. Then I began thinking about having a family of my own. Even though there was not an example for me growing up, I studied patterns of fatherhood on five continents."
"I started to see the similarities fathers used to raise their children and termed them 'tools.' I began taking notes for my own personal use, and through a series of miracles, those notes have become a book and a national best-seller," Slayton explained.
The book comes right before Father's Day is celebrated here in the United States, and Slayton is hopeful that men will be able to benefit from its tools. Slayton decided to offer the book for free, including no shipping and handling, to members of the military.
"There are so many men in the service who are returning home to their families. Hopefully this is one more tool for returning dads, especially in light of the troop drawdown. I understand what it is to be away from your children; I was based in Argentina while my own family was in New York."
Slayton encourages men to take their role as father seriously.
"It is the most important job any of us will ever have … It will last for eternity and impact three generations. We, as men, recognize the need for tools in order to build things, be successful, which is why I use the idea of tools in the book."
Lest he be accused of leaving out the female audience, Slayton offers this advice.
"Pray for your husbands. The power of prayer cannot be underestimated. With Father's Day coming up, don't focus on the material things … encourage your husband. Get him a book (maybe this one) to help him along the way. Always believe in your husband."
