'Grey's Anatomy' News, Update: Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes Opens Up About the One-Year Time Jump; Callie and Arizona Together Again?

Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer for ABC's popular medical drama TV series "Grey's Anatomy," recently sat down with TV Line's Michael Ausiello to discuss about the show's decision to feature the one-year time jump after McDreamy's death. Meanwhile, tension between Callie and Arizona is expected to happen in Season 12.

Rhimes explained to the media outlet that the series' move to flash forward an entire year from Dr. Shepherd's demise was really intended to save Dr. Meredith from suffering the grief of loss.

The writer and producer said that she "couldn't imagine a world in which Meredith could go a month and be able to speak or breathe – or even six months."

"I needed time to pass for her to even be in a place where I felt like she could have a conversation," she said (via TVLine).

Other than sparing the character from undergoing such hardships, Rhimes also has in mind the people involved in the show – the writers and the viewers.

"I found it incredibly painful to write and incredibly painful to watch. I didn't go to a single moment of the filming because I was like, 'I'm just going to stand there and cry like an idiot,'" she said.

Despite Rhimes' revelation that Meredith won't be in a hurry to find love again so soon, another showrunner said that at least some of her colleagues will go back to the dating game. But needless to say, it won't be easy for them.

Speaking to TV Guide, EP Debbie Allen said that after Callie and Arizona's break-up, Callie will be pushing forward to find new love. However, Jessica Capshaw's alter-ego's not exactly comfortable with that idea.

"When two people have had this kind of committed, tumultuous relationship - and it has been that - and then finally they go their separate ways, there's still love there," Allen said.

But followers of the Calzona tandem might still have to hold off their hopes for a while. If the couple, according to the publication, ever decides to get back together, the path would be a very long one.

The jealousy and tensions between the two would eventually make the colleagues realize that at the end of the day, what they need is each other.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 kicks off September 24 at 8/7c on ABC.
