'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' Release Date News: Director Hints at 2020 Premiere

Director James Gunn provided a hint that fans might see "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" sometime in 2020.

Even before the second movie installment premiered in May, Gunn had already confirmed that Marvel had green lighted the making of a "Vol. 3" title through a lengthy Facebook post he put up in April. But its release window remained unknown at the time.

Marvel Studios and people attached to creating films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe are normally tight-lipped when talking about the details of yet-to-be-released titles. However, Gunn recently gave fans a clear inkling of when the "Vol. 3" movie will be released during a casual Facebook exchange with a fan.

When the movie fan asked Gunn when the third film was coming, the film director replied: "In a little under three years."

With that, fans can now expect that the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" film will be released sometime before 2020 ends.

According to reports, Marvel has already marked three dates for 2020 – May 1, Aug. 7, and Nov. 6 – but the studio has yet to decide which films will be placed in those schedules.

Meanwhile, Polygon suggested that Marvel was unlikely to place "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" in a near-holiday schedule. It is also worth noting that the first and second installments of the film franchise were released on Aug. 1 and May 5, respectively.

Given the movie's release dates in the past, a premiere date sometime in the summer of 2020 is more feasible.

Meanwhile, Gunn also answered one of the dreaded plot speculations about the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie franchise – is Vance Astro ever going to show up? Gunn's answer was a clear "No" during his appearance at HasCon last week, according to reports.

Gunn told fans that the chances of seeing Vance in a movie is "not great," implying that the character was not part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" script that he had already finished.

Fans of Marvel comic books may recall that Vance is one of the founding members of the Guardians of the Galaxy who was also originally from Earth. And his absence in the film will always be felt by those who avidly read about the Guardians for years.
