'Half-Life 3' Update News: Fans Create Their Own Playable Take of the Game That Never Was

Fans may have accepted the fact that Valve Corporation is not going to give them "Half-Life 3" but that does not mean they cannot create one on their own.

In fact, this is what many fans have been doing as they wait for the game's fate and slowly come to realize that an official threequel of the beloved series will not see the light of day.

The most popular is "Lambda Wars," which comes in the form of a Source Engine mod for Alien Swarm that transforms "Half-Life 2" into a strategy game that even features a multiplayer mode.

While this is admittedly one of the most ambitious attempts to make "Half-Life 3" happen, a lot of fanatics also took a shot at making what they imagine the game would be as a response to a noncompetitive hackathon conducted by game developer Laura Michet.

Here, they were tasked to create a game based on the synopsis that scriptwriter Marc Laidlaw crafted for the game that never was, which he wrote about in detail in a blog post back in August.

It did not take long for "Half-Life" fanatics to come up with a lot of good stuff, using their creativity and their love for the series. While the results are nowhere near a full-on "Half-Life 3" game, they put together entries that are worth checking out as they captured what the series is all about, using elements the franchise is known for while spicing things up.

One fanmade "Half-Life 3" game named "Expo Decay" features a tiny Gordon Freeman fighting his way through headcrabs in an attempt to free himself from a compound in the snow where Combine soldiers are keeping him hostage.

This "Half-Life 3" inspired game is described as a combination of "Hotline Miami" and "LEGO Star Wars" so those who loved either game and are big fans of "Half-Life" will love this.

A developer named DaveMakes provided a fresh take of the game resulting to his entry called "The Third One," which reimagines "Half-Life" as a first-person slasher that feature dialogue exchanges and hand drawn-style graphics.

There are a total of 32 entries in the "Half-Life 3" contest, all of which players can try out by downloading them from here.
